What’s good about this system?

We’re all familiar with using music streaming services like TIDAL on our phones, but with both TIDAL and Deezer (and I’m sure many others to follow) now offering lossless or even High-definition Audio as part of their services. Many died-in-the-wool audiophiles (the kind for whom anything other than a 12” vinyl disc would be considered sacrilege) are now not just accepting streaming, they are positively seeking out ways to build such premium audio quality into their existing systems.

Moreover – for customers curious about the performance capable from such services, Cyrus Audio now has a range of powerful streaming solutions.

But hang on…surely you should just connect your phone with TIDAL wirelessly via Bluetooth? Well – although convenient, that would be a big compromise in audio quality. Bluetooth, even with the higher ‘bandwidth’ aptX codec will seriously constrict the data transferred and the resulting loss of quality is clearly audible…

Now, though, Cyrus have partnered with Google and TIDAL to bring streaming to their highly acclaimed Cyrus ONE with uncompressed, unrestricted quality.

The Cyrus ONE (£699) is a remarkable audio product offering prodigious amounts of power – capable of driving speakers costing tens of thousands of pounds, for little more than a hi-fi starter system. Cyrus ONE also has a built-in ‘Phono-stage’ – a high-quality pre-amplifier that allows direct connection of a ‘turntable’ (so vinyl junkies won’t be restricted too much in choice). The addition of Google’s Chromecast and a free three month subscription to TIDAL Hi-Fi (their £20/ month premium service) completes the package.

Using Chromecast Audio is a revelation. Firstly, one of the remarkable attributes of the diminutive device is the quality of its on-board Digital to Analogue Converters. (DACs) – Google use a high specification audio DAC – a chip considered by most audiophiles to be more than up to the job of reproducing high-quality and high-definition music.

Secondly, and perhaps of more importance – is the ease of use. Google has perfected the seamless integration with apps such as TIDAL, and even Deezer or Spotify, making sure that although your complete system control is handled in the phone, track selection, volume etc., the data comes to the amplifier via a direct connection to the internet from the Chromecast – completely uncompressed and it couldn’t be simpler to use.

Don’t take our word for it though. Why not call up one of the dealers listed above and arrange your audition? Even if you’re just curious as to how good it really can be, it would be our pleasure to introduce you to the Cyrus Experience.

Beta testing the Phono Signature

  • Published in Blog

It’s not every day I hear something that makes me sit up and realise something special happened at work that day! This week we visited Cambridge retailer Criterion Audio and ran a listening session at their stunning new store just north of the City. Our plan was to spend the morning with Bill and James and play them our prototype phono stage, the Phono Signature. These guys have a deep understanding of record players, cartridges and phono stages and we wanted to hear how our prototype sounded in the store. Their thoughts and feedback were going to be really valuable as we completed the tuning of this new model.

So just how does a new Cyrus product get to sound the way it does exactly? The initial design stages include circuit topology and functions and implementing the layout in such a way that the components sound best, and especially in the case of a phono stage, be extremely quiet. Once the first sample is built up manually into a Beta unit, we can begin the exciting initial tuning stage in our own demo rooms. This is where we get the first chance to hear the sound.

Philosophically Cyrus never begins any new design by referencing against existing competitor products. This is because we want to engineer unique topologies that advance performance rather than merely recycle old concepts. In this way we ensure each new Cyrus project is at the leading –edge of audio engineering and true to our values and principles. Once the product is through the initial tuning stage we want to hear it playing in as many rooms as possible and with as many different music types, as we begin to refine the sound. Having already spent several weeks tuning the “voice” into the Cyrus sound, we next work on smaller changes to maximise resolution.

Today’s plan was to install Phono Signature in a variety of systems to ensure our voicing decisions to date were correctly balanced. As you can imagine, the voicing processes of any new model is the fun part of any product development schedule, yet it must be undertaken with scientific rigor.

Setting up a pair of Mono X 300 amps with a DAC XP Signature as the main amp system, we then connected the prototype phono stage and a high performance turntable.  Bill was able to provide a variety of cartridges so we could evaluate MM & MC pickups as we ran through a wide range of LP’s. One thing that was quickly added was a PSX-R2 for the DAC XP and the sound was immediately more detailed with expanded soundstage and stronger bass.

Playing a heavyweight Audio Fidelity pressing of Sade - Diamond Life (AFZLP 089) we wanted to hear how our initial tuning of the soundstage sounded in the demroom. We had been using the opening track Smooth Operator over the last few weeks and hearing the scale of the voice and the layering of the backing in this new demroom really helped provide a useful comparison. The dynamics and scale of the sound was breath-taking as Sade’s voice ranged between her trademark power and sultry subtlety. The phono Signature clearly revealed the many subtle layers and immense power created in the mastering process of this outstanding LP.

Adding a PSX-R2 to the Phono Signature expanded the bass, becoming better defined with a real insight into the start and end of each note.

Other terrific LP’s we played that day included Doug MacLeod Come - To Find (APB 1027) and Von Freeman - The Great Divide (66917-90759-1-4).

So what does the forthcoming Cyrus phono stage sound like? Well of course your ears will have to hear it when we launch later this year, but our listening session in Cambridge confirmed our hopes that we could create a real step forward for all LP owners, and at the same time provide many advanced and unique features never before offered on a phono stage. The outstanding audio quality and unprecedented usability will be a step change in phono head amp technology for those of us who have a passion for the sound of Vinyl.

Thanks again to Criterion Audio for sharing their fabulous listening room, outstanding coffee and of course their ears. Watch out for more news soon.

Peter Bartlett
