Streaming with Cyrus

Streaming with Cyrus

Streaming your music to your hifi system is the fastest growing trend and represents the latest generation of music sources. It's grown hugely in popularity over the last few years with high resolution files becoming more available and instant access to your entire music library, available at the touch of a button. For those of us that have seen the changes from vinyl to cassette to cd, moving from physical music sources to digital files can seem a bit daunting. So if you've been avoiding delving into streaming, we're here to help you to understand how it works.

Although we can't promise streaming digital music will be the trend which sticks around, we are pleased to tell you that setting up and using Cyrus streamers won't give you a headache. It could actually reignite your love for music.

Why Stream?
Streaming a digital library means that you don't need a huge stack of CDs in your listening room; instead storing everything on a digital storage device such as a hard drive or network drive. This enables you to access your entire music collection without even moving from your listening position, and get full access to albums, artwork, playlists and internet radio using our dedicated control app, Cadence.

With the growing availability of high definition music files, it's now easier to enjoy higher quality music than ever before without interruption using our expertly engineered streaming models.

Streaming Made Easy
Cyrus streamers can be set up in a matter of minutes, and setting up your music for streaming is just as simple. But if you're new to streaming and don't know where to start, we recommend taking a look at our Getting Started Streaming Guide, or for more detail, our FAQ page.

Cyrus Streamers
All of our streamers are compatible with the highest quality 24-bit/192 kHz files and enjoy the constant advancements created by our ongoing R&D processes.

The Stream XP2, Stream X Signature, Stream Xa use the same dedicated, advanced network streaming module, producing clear and deep sound quality. The Stream XP2 incorporates our streaming engine with a high performance DAC and pre amplifier, reproducing sound without interference or loss of detail.

It can be upgraded further with the addition of a Qx card for the ultimate streaming experience, making your music come alive. The Stream X Signature is our flagship streaming source with a host of sonic improvements to provide true audiophile sound.

The Stream Xa consists of our advanced streaming module as well as a built-in DAC. This allows it to fit into a traditional hi-fi system or be easily linked with an amp to create a great sound.

Stream X Signature

Should you require further advice, your local Cyrus retailer can provide a wealth of experience and support to help find the best solution for you.

Q. I want to add a streamer to my existing system. Which streaming products should I be looking at?
A. If you currently have an amplifier with only analogue inputs, you will need a streamer with a built-in DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter), as this will have analogue outputs to connect to your existing amp. In this case, our Stream Xa may be the best option. If you have a range of digital inputs available on your amp, or you have a separate DAC, you may want to consider our dedicated source Stream X Signature which can be connected directly to the digital input of your amp/DAC.

Q. Which finishes are available?
A. Cyrus streamers are available in Brushed Black or Quartz Silver.

Q. Is the streamer supplied with a remote control?
A. A remote control is not supplied, but our current iR14 remote control can be used. Our previous n-remote control has been discontinued but may be supported by some streamers. Please note that Lyric models require a special remote commander that cannot control other Cyrus devices.

Q. Can I use a smartphone or tablet to control my Cyrus streamer?
A. Yes, our Cadence app provides full functionality of a streamer to owners of Apple or Android smartphones or tablets. Windows devices are not currently supported.

Q. Can I control the volume of my Cyrus streamer using Cadence?
A. If your streamer features a volume control then it can be controlled from Cadence. The Stream X2, Stream Xa, and Stream X Signature do not feature preamplifiers and as such the volume cannot be controlled by Cadence. In these cases, volume is adjusted by the controller for your preamplifier.

Storing Digital Music Files

Q. Is a computer the best place to store my digital music files?
A. A computer seems a conventional place to store digital files but this is not the best solution. It is best to store the files on a NAS drive (Network Attached Storage). This option offers the best speed, stability, user interface, and performance without the need for involving a computer. It’s important to remember that computers are not optimised for audiophile performance and as such you may be disappointed at the result if you rely on a computer for streaming files.

Q. Is there a particular NAS drive I should buy?
A. The main variable to consider when choosing a NAS drive is that the media server search options meet your requirements, as well as checking that your files are supported. Whichever NAS drive you choose, it must have a UPnP or DLNA compatible media server installed. It is also strongly advised to choose one that is RAID protected so that all of your music is automatically backed up in the event of a drive failure.

Q. What are the main differences between a NAS drive and a portable USB hard drive?
A. USB hard drives do not have a UPnP or DLNA server installed and consequently this severely limits the way in which you can browse your music library. There is no automatic categorising of your music collection into artist, album genre etc.  Also, every time you want to store new music, you will need to reconnect the USB hard drive to your computer. Portable hard drives are generally not RAID protected so have no additional back-up features and they can only be used by one device at a time. USB hard disk drives are also typically slower to navigate than a NAS drive.

Q. Where do I obtain digital music files?
A. If you have an existing CD collection, you may wish to rip1 these files into a digital format stored on a NAS or hard drive. We recommend the use of a downloadable program called ‘dbPoweramp’ for this purpose as it is quick and simple to use. Digital music files can also be purchased online from various sources, and some websites may be able to offer high resolution music at higher quality even than CD. One such example would be

Q. Which file formats do you recommend for high quality music?
A. FLAC is a very popular choice and is widely used because it is a high quality music format that also retains metadata information. Retaining the metadata means that you can see artist, album, artwork and track information on the Cadence app. Apple Lossless and AIFF formats can also be used.

Q. Which file formats are supported?
A. FLAC, WAV and AIFF files (up to 24-bit/192kHz), WMA (not .WMA lossless or .WMA pro), AAC (must not have copy protection), MP3 and Apple Lossless (ALAC) (up to 24-bit/96kHz)

Q. Why does the Stream X Signature/Stream Xa feature an inactive Phones & Mute button?
A. In order to keep the cost of our streaming products as low as possible, our streamers all feature the same front panel. This also ensures that all of our models look the same and feel consistent across the range.

Setting Up Your Streaming Music Player

Q. Is it better to have a wireless or wired setup?
A. For best performance we recommend a wired network due to the increased speed and stability compared to a wireless network. This method also reduces the possibility of external interference impairing the performance of the streamer.

Q. Why do you recommend using a switch when I have spare ports on my router?
A. Using a network switch between NAS and streamer ensures quickest possible data transfer between the two devices, without the need to involve the router itself in the process. It will provide the fastest and most consistent level of data transmission between the Cyrus streamer and your NAS drive.

Q. Do you recommend Ethernet-over-mains devices?
A. Only if necessary. An Ethernet-over-mains system is preferential to a wireless network as it tends to be more stable but it may suffer from slowdown and/or drop out. Some Ethernet-over-mains devices also go into a ‘sleep’ mode if not used for some time which may not wake up in time when the streamer is switched on.

Q. Do I need a specific type of router?
A. As long as your router is UPnP (Universal Plug n Play) compatible then it should work well. Most routers (with the exception of some Apple devices) meet this standard.

Q. Do I need to configure the streaming product to see my NAS drive?
A. UPnP streaming is designed to be simple and easy to setup. If you have a UPnP-enabled NAS Drive on your network setup correctly to share its contents, you will be able to see the server as soon as you navigate into the ‘Network’ mode on the Cyrus streamer.

Q. How do I setup with a wireless network?
A. You need to make sure the SSID (network name) is broadcasting and that you have written down the password. We recommend following the getting started guide to setup the wireless connection. Please note that special characters are not supported and the SSID must contain only letters (upper or lower case) and numerals.

Q. How do I connect an analogue source to my streamer?
A. You can purchase an analogue to digital converter for this purpose. Your Cyrus retailer should be able to provide you with the correct equipment for your setup.

Q. What can I connect to the digital inputs of my streamer?
A. The five digital inputs on the streaming models are designed for stereo PCM signals up to 24-bit/192khz, and can be connected to sources such as a CD player, television, games console, or almost anything with a digital output. They will not accept surround sound signals such as Dolby Digital or DTS so the source device must be configured to output a stereo PCM signal.

Q. Can I use the streamer as a source component?
A. Our streaming models that also feature amplifiers have an option in the setup menu to disable the volume control and pre-outputs. This allows the unit to be used within a system as a source component, though it will not perform as well as a dedicated streamer such as the Stream X Signature.

Using your Cyrus streaming media player

Q. How do I update the firmware on the streaming products?
A. Firmware updates for the streaming products are handled by the retailer from whom you purchased the unit. They will be happy to update the firmware for you if required.

Q. Which search terms can I use on a NAS drive to browse my music?
A. The media server running on the NAS drive dictates which search terms are offered. Generally you’ll find options for searching by artist, album or genre but some media servers can offer more options or even allow you to create custom fields.

Q. Why do my tracks appear in alphabetical order or otherwise differently to the way that I can see them when I browse the drive with a computer?
A: The sorting and presentation of tracks is not a function of the streamer, but of the media server on your source device. Most media servers are set up to browse the library in different ways depending on the search option selected, and may be configurable. We would recommend getting in touch with the NAS drive manufacturer if you are unsure how to browse the drive in the way that you prefer. In the case of poorly ripped tracks (because of damage to discs for instance), then track information may be missing and you may encounter problems when browsing those files.

Q. How can I store favourite radio stations via the internet radio function?
A. Favourite radio stations can be stored using the app or the n-remote. Please see here for instructions on how to do this. The ‘Account Association’ function is no longer supported.

Q. How can I manually enter the name of my wireless network if the SSID is hidden?
A. The software will only search for networks with an active broadcast of the SSID (network name). If you are currently hiding the network name then you will need to temporarily disable that function to allow the streaming music player to connect. Once the settings have saved and the device has connected you can hide the SSID again.

Q. Is gapless playback supported?
A. Yes, gapless playback between songs is fully supported.

Q. Why does the internet radio keep dropping out, but I can stream without issue?
A. The performance of the TuneIn internet radio service is reliant upon your broadband connection, so a poor internet connection may impair the performance of the internet radio function.

Q. The volume setting has disappeared on my streamer and I’m not getting any sound any more. What’s happened?
A. You may have accidentally enabled source mode, which disables the preamplifier and power amplifier (if fitted) stages. If you select ‘Used as a Source’ in the setup menu, followed by ‘Used as an amplifier’, this should resolve the problem.
